Food Allergies – Symptoms, Treatment and Self-management

Food allergies is a state where symptoms will occur because of immune reaction and induced by some type of foods. Allergic to food can be notice by the situations like:

  • Intolerants to food.
  • Intestinal disturbance syndrome.
  • Physical stress.
  • Food poisoning.

When allergy had happened, you must avoid those foods that cause the allergy to prevent it from becoming severe.

Symptoms

  • Itchy throat.
  • Anaphylaxis (could cause death).
  • Stomachache.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Stomach rigor.
  • Irritation in the mouth, throat, eyes and skin.
  • Irritation / urticaria.
  • Angioedema to eyelids and lip.
  • Nasal cavity obstruction / runny nose.
  • Suffocating / rhonchus sound (wheezing breath sound).

Treatment

Treatment main objective is to reduce symptoms and avoid allergic reaction from recurring. Light symptoms do not require any treatment. It will recede within a short time. Skin freshener cream can be utilized to relieve rashes. Severe symptoms need treatment using corticosteroids.

Self-management

  • Avoid eating food that can cause allergy to you.
  • Ask or make sure first the content / food ingredient to avoid allergen material that are hidden in the food.
  • Read food label and know scientific and technical terminology on food. (Milk is known as casein, protein milk and others).
  • Be ready for emergency treatment. Anaphylaxis reactions caused by food allergy have potential to cause death.
  • Wearing medical warning ring that stating the allergy suffered.
