What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults. It is a chronic, often disabling disease that damages the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the protective myelin covering of the central nervous system, causing inflammation and often destroying the myelin in patches.

When this happens, the natural flow of nerve impulses along nerve fibers is interrupted or distorted. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is thought to be an auto immune disorder, which means the body’s immune system incorrectly attacks the person’s healthy tissue.
